The Hotel Fair will take place on Sunday morning, June 5. An in-house event, it's an opportunity for every conferee to show their work to their colleagues (and, as always, there is no fee for this). Just open your hotel room at the times noted below. Some artists create entire installations. Others approach the event more casually, placing work on their beds or on the furniture. If you don't have a room at the Inn, not to worry; you can set up in the lobby.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Notes on the Hotel Fair

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Please note that the nature of this Hotel Fair, or any hotel fair, is that exhibitors do not get to see the other exhibitors in their time slot. The only way to see everything is to be a viewer rather than an exhibitor. (Or share your room so that you and your roommate can take turns venturing out to see what's being shown during your time slot. Some conferees prefer not to share their personal accommodations but are open to the idea of sharing the room for exhibition during the Hotel Fair. Use the Message Board to pair up.)
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
Some views of earlier Hotel Fairs The <span style="color: blue; font-family: "arial";">History of the Encaustic Conference<span style="font-family: "arial";"> blog has a lot of good pictures. Once you're on the blog, scroll about one quarter of the way down the page (it's a long page) to find the Hotel Fair section. The post following this one, Tips for Setting Up For Your Hotel Fair, <span style="font-family: "arial";">shows you how other conferees set up at Conference 7. <span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
Can you sell out of your room?
Yes. Some conferees use electronic card readers to accept credit cards (though Wifi can be weak in the Cape Tip and Waterview Rooms). Others take checks, cash, or IOUs. And still others are open to trading. There are no rules, except that the business is between you and the person interested in your work. Neither The Encaustic Conference nor the Provincetown Inn assumes any responsibility for your transactions.

Is the Hotel Fair open to the general public?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For security and liability reasons, the Hotel Fair is not open to the public. However we do invite all the gallery owners in town. We also invite a number of local and regional critics, curators, writers and publishers to attend the Conference specifically so that they may see what's going on in contemporary encaustic. We encourage them to attend the Hotel Fair, and many do.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Is there anything you can't do?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You cannot make holes in the wall with pins or nails. If you do and the Inn sees them, you will be charged a refinishing fee. However, there are temporary-tape picture hangers, and artists with light-in-weight work may use those. Others simply prop work on the furniture or the bed. Conferees have also used the bathroom to create displays and propped paintings on the outdoor areas of their rooms. Be inventive while being respectful of the limitations.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"What if I have registered only for Friday and Saturday night. I'm supposed to vacate my room by 11:00 am on Sunday. Can I participate?"
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yes! However, be prepared to vacate your room as soon as the Hotel Fair is over. You can leave your suitcases and/or wrapped art with the manager once you have checked out, but know that neither the Inn nor the Conference will assume responsibility for your belongings.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"What if I'm not staying at the Inn. Can I participate?"
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yes! The lobby is available for you to set up. Participants typically place work on the furniture in the lobby. Others have brought their own card table and chairs to set up. Again, be inventive without banging into the walls. And please be conscious of the amount of space you take, which you can gauge as others are setting up. A few installations from Conference 8 below:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"Can I ship artwork to the Inn?"
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you are staying elsewhere, no. If you are a registered guest at the Inn, yes. The Eric, the event manager, will accept packages addressed to you. Add this at the bottom of your label: ATT: ERIC, ENC. CONF. Please know, however, that neither the Provincetown Inn nor the Encaustic Conference will assume responsibility for them. Some additional things to bear in mind if you ship your work:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">. Provincetown is at the very tip of the Cape, so UPS and Fed Ex typically arrive late in the day

"How do I ship it back?"
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">. If you send packages to yourself, be prepared to send them back. That means contacting your carrier ahead of time to ascertain what you'll need to provide in the way of labels
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">. You will be responsible for storing the shipping boxes
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">. Make sure your carrier will pick up the packages for return delivery. If not, you will need to drop the packages off. Make sure you know where the drop locations are and when they are open
.Here's the link for the FedEx drop-off location in town
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How to let conferees know where to find you
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So that conferees know what room you're in, I will post outside the Mayflower Room a large sheet of paper with all the rooms numbers. If you're participating in the Hotel Fair, write your name next to your room number so that people can find you easily. Also, use the Comments section below to note your name if you'll be participating. Feel free to include a website URL, too.
I've identified a few locations so that you might arrive with a sense of what to expect. (Plus it's really fun to see the range of work shown at the fair.)

Schedule for Conference 10
. 9:30-11:00: The Motel section (Harborview, Cape Tip, and Breakwater), plus the Lobby for those not staying at the Inn
11:00-12:30: The Inn section (Standard and Waterview)

Announce yourself
Seems simple enough, but not everyone does it. Identify yourself with a card or small sign outside the door to your room. We'll also set up an informal room list outside the Mayflower Room so that you can print your name next to the room number you're in.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">While Scholarships have yet to be awarded to Conference 10, we know that many others would appreciate funding to attend. We encourage <span style="font-family: "arial";">all conferees to seek out professional development grants. General info about these kinds of grants is noted below, along with a few specifics.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">These are grants that might be available in your city, region, state, university or other grant-giving entity to fund, or help fund, your attendance at The Conference. The International Encaustic Conference is widely seen as the foremost event of its kind. Our international presenters—artists, gallerists, curators and critics—have exhibited academic and professional achievement at the highest levels. The professional stance and goals of the Conference, as evidenced by the History of the Encaustic Conference blog, and outlined as a mission statement on the Conference blog (sidebar right), should serve as your informational reference.
.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Conferees have attended on grants from the states of Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Montana, New Hampshire<span style="font-family: "arial";"> and Oregon, as well as on professional development grants from their universities and/or regions. You might also look into grants that might be offered by organizations in which you are a member.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Here’s an example of professional development funding, notes Cherie Mittenthal: “Massachusetts residents can apply for a Cultural Council grant. Every city and town has money available.” A quick look through the site offers this information: Average grants tend to be modest ($200-$500) and are reimbursement-based, meaning the applicant expends their own money, and if approved for a grant, then submits paperwork for reimbursement. A grand of this type would cover conference entry in whole or in part.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "arial";">. A slide talk on encaustic punctuated with pictures from the event
. A work on paper or small painting inspired by one of the demos or workshops you attend
. A chance to come to your studio to select specially made postcards
. A studio visit with a talk about your work
. If you are already teaching and are fluent in the medium, you might offer a demo or workshop to your funders; this might take place in your studio or at an institution that . underwrites your funding.
. Both Paypal and Square allow you to set up accounts into which money can be deposited. Set up a "store" or "popup shop" on your blog or website. Be clear that it's is a special event with special prices. If it's a limited selling time, install a countdown clock on your site (Google "countdown gadgets). If you're gallery represented, offer work of a size or style that none of your dealers sells. With Square you also can take credit card payments at the Hotel Fair with the swipe of a card in a reader that plugs into your smart phone.
. Don't forget the Hotel Fair as a way to make some sales! You might also advertise it. Be inventive with emails and FB announcements leading up to the Conference, and don't be shy about promoting your work at the Conference. As always there will be an info table there.
. <span style="font-family: "arial";">A Few Tips to Help You in Your Application for Funding:
If you are presenting<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">. You are adding to the discourse
of contemporary encaustic, indeed to the discourse of contemporary art in any medium<u1:p></u1:p>
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">

help broaden awareness of this contemporary medium with ancient roots<u1:p></u1:p>
<span style="font-family: "arial";">. You are a role model for
what is possible<u1:p></u1:p>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">. The International
Encaustic Conference is the standard bearer for the medium, and you are a
valued part of it
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">If you are attending
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">. The International Encaustic Conference is the standard bearer for the medium, giving you the opportunity to learn from and interact with the best practitioners in the field, as well as enjoy opportunities for exhibiting and networking
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">. With a strong presence of curators, gallerists, critics, art journalists and art publishers from the region, as well as around the country, your work has the potential to be seen in a way that might not otherwise be possible
. The Encaustic Conference offers talks and interactive discussions on professional development
. Additionally, the Conference offers you opportunities to acquire books and supplies, via a Vendor Room, book signings, and a Hotel Fair
.
There's no other place quite like P-town. It's the country's oldest continuous art colony, an active fishing village, and a gay mecca. Where else can you spend the evening wandering the art galleries, tuck into fried clams or a lobsta dinnah, and then bump into three or four Chers and a gaggle of Gagas on your walk home?

A glimpse of Provincetown architecture by Chris Seufert (from the Internet)

Once you’re in P-town, everything is within a 10-20 minute walking distance, with the ocean, shops, galleries and quirky New England architecture all along the way. If you prefer to drive from the Inn to the center of town, there's (for-a-fee) parking on McMillan Wharf and at Duarte's lot off of Bradford. If you prefer to take a taxi or pedicab, they'll be waiting at the front door of the Inn. If you plan to stay a few extra days (stay, stay!) there's also whale watching, bike rentals, National Park Service bike trails, dune rides, and that big sandy thing--yeah, the beach.
(Remember, The Conference is providing lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; Inn guests get a continental breakfast; and there's an opt-in dinner at the Inn on Saturday before the evening's Keynote talk.) There's also a listing for coffeeshops, pizza and other quick food (no McD's or BK here).
If you've got a room at the Inn and wish to share it or if you're looking to share someone's room, post your request in the Comments section below The 100 Inn rooms go quickly, and staying at the Inn is desirable, so many conferees book right away and then seek roommates.

Looking for a ride? If you're driving and wish to share the ride, or wish to be a passenger, use this Message Board. Some conferees meet up at Logan Airporst in Boston and then share a rental car to P-town, or just a taxi to the ferry.

Finding a driver/passengers is not just to and from the Conference itself. While all the Conference events take place at the Provincetown Inn, the Pre- and Post-Conference Workshops, as well as the juried show and Conference Curatorial exhibition, take place at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, a 10-mile ride away. We'll make sure everyone gets there, but this is a great way to begin the process.
Is there an orientation for those of us who are new to the Conference?
Yes, indeed. We've scheduled a 30-minute session on Friday morning, 10:45 to 11:15 during a special one-hour break between sessions. We'll meet in the Fore'n'Aft room, right off the lobby.

What if I want to register for just one day of the conference?
You need to register for the entire conference. If you decide to attend just one day, that's up to you.

What if I don't like the event I've selected. May I switch rooms?
Sorry, no. Moving around once a presentation is underway is rude to the presenter and annoying to the audience.

What's the procedure for the Hotel Fair?
Info here and here.

Help! I want to participate in the Hotel Fair but I need to vacate my room at noon.
Don't worry, ou can participate. Just be sure to vacate your room right after the Fair. You can leave your baggage at the front desk.

Are post-conference workshops included in the conference price?
There is a separate fee.

Do I need to bring materials for the conference demos or workshops?
Conference demos are strictly demonstration, so you do not need to bring materials. The Pre- and Post-Conference workshops are different. Teachers typically provide either a list of supplies that you may bring with you or purchase from conference vendors, or they may provide materials for a fee. Castle Hill or the specific teachers will contact you if you're signed up.Also, it's important to note that our wonderful vendors, including R&F Handmade Paints, Enkaustikos, Kama Pigments and Evans Encaustics, donate a large amount of paint, medium and materials for you to try.

Could I register only for the Post-Conference sessions?
Sure. But you'll miss a great conference!

What if I decide at a later date that I wish to register for a Post-Conference workshop? Possible?
Sure. If there is space, you can register even during the conference if you wish. Please know, however, that the workshops tend to fill up quickly. Occasionally a spot may open at a late date, but I wouldn't plan on that as a registration strategy.

What are the hours of the post-conference workshops, and where do they take place?
The workshops run from 10:00am to 4:00 pm with an hour for lunch as determined by the instructor. Informal events are planned for some of the evenings. All post-Conference events take place at Castle Hill in Truro, the next town over. At the Conference we encourage those with cars to offer rides to those without. There will be a signup sheet. And on Monday morning I'm in the parking lot looking to match up cars and riders. It's also possible for a group to take a taxi. The ride thing seems confusing but it always works out. Cherie will post a sign-up sheet to help link drivers with those who need a ride. (Be sure to chip in for gas.)

I see you have multiple-day workshops. Is there any chance I could take just one day of, say, the three-day workshop so that I may take different workshops on other days?
Nice try, but the point of multiple-day workshops is to have the opportunity to explore one area in depth with one teacher and the same group of equally committed particpants.

Would you explain how Conference presenters get selected?
I aim for a mix of new presenters and of returning presenters whose events filled to capacity and/or were noted with enthusiasm. I used to issue a Call for Proposals, but we now have such a large ad hoc faculty, all of whom have continually evolving ideas of what they'd like to present--most of whom teach at the university level, and others who are high-level entrepreneurial teachers--that I tend to draw from that pool. I also travel widely and talk with a lot of teaching artists. If I learn of someone who's doing something you might like, I bring her or him in. Also, sometimes I have an idea about an event I'd like to see presented, and I invite someone to present it. I will continue to schedule a mix of new and back-by-popular-demand favorites. I try to give you what you want--and avoid what you don't want. I read every suggestion, comment and complaint that's put into the Suggestion Box.

What's the parking like?
The Provincetown Inn has a very large lot which is FREE for conferees to use, whether you're staying at the Inn or not. Parking in town is less accommodating. There's not a lot of free on-street parking, but there are pay-to-park lots--municipal lots on the hill above town and on McMillan Wharf in the center of town, and another, the rather costly Duarte's, on Bradford St.

Where can I find a map of Provincetown?
Click here for a fully printable map of Provincetown

What about transportation to and from Provincetown?
Getting to and from the conference is your responsibility, but I have provided information about buses, taxis and a car service. Everything's posted here.

How soon can I arrive?
The Inn is fully booked earlier in the week of the Conference. If you donlt have a room and wish to come early, check out the Alternative Accommodations page. It's a great way to take advantage of what P-town has to offer in June: the beach, biking, kayaking, exploring the shops and galleries, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, whale watching, fishing, and satisfying your seafood cravings at fried clam shacks as well as upscale restaurants.

Where can I find information about the Provincetown galleries?
Encaustic-specific info here. Gallery Guides should be available at the Inn.

What's the weather like in Provincetown?
Normally, the temperature range in early June is is in the high 60s to low 70s during the day, and in the low 60s to high 50s at night. But that's an average. It can get hotter or colder. And the weather can turn on a dime.

So how should I dress?
I'd bring a light jacket or a sweater, a turtleneck, a t-shirt and a tank top; pants and shorts; sunglasses and an umbrella. In other words, dress for New England weather, which encompases a meteorological range. You can safely leave the boots at home, however: The only thing you don't have to plan for this time of year is snow.

Is there a dress code?
Nope. Wear what you like, whether it's a sundress, jeans and a t-shirt, a suit, or cutoffs. Your choice. One thing I would suggest is that you have a sweater, shawl or other coverup for the Mayflower room, where the all-Conference events take place as well as many demos. It's a big room, and the cooling is uneven, so to get the warm areas cool, the cool areas may be cold.

Does the Conference provide food?
Coffee and tea are provided all day, every day, of the three-day Conference. A fabulous buffet lunch is provided on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, where you'll find a selecton of meats, cheeses, vegetables. pastas and salads. (Both Cherie and I are vegetarians, so we make sure the food offerings are good.) On Saturday evening there is an opt-in dinner buffet offered by the Provincetown Inn, which allows you to make an easy transition between the afternoon sessions and the evening keynote talk. Info to come closer to the Conference.

For those staying at the Inn there's a breakfast room where you can get a nice selection of breakfast foods. You may be asked to show your room card if the staff doesn't recognize you.

Pre- and Post-Conference workshops do not provide lunch, however there's a good sandwich shop nearby and a Castle Hill staffer comes by to take orders. Lunch is about $10, but that's between you and what you select from the menu.

When will you have information about the opt-in Saturday dinner?

The International Encaustic Conference is a professional conference, founded by and for professionals, with an ad hoc faculty of the best professional practitioners in the field today. However, we understand that professionals are made over time. Indeed, each of us has developed our esthetic sensibility as well as technical skill over many years. We understand how to best develop and direct both art beginnners as well as experienced artists who are new to the medium of encaustic. So if you are a newbie--either to art or to the medium--we want you to know that there's a place for you at The International Encaustic Conference.

Here are a few things to know:

The Conference takes place at The Provincetown Inn at One Commercial Street in Provincetown. The Inn, whose rooms are now fully booked (if you need accommodations, see this this list of alternative lodging ), has a number of function rooms. Mayflower and Beachside are the demo rooms; Harbor and Fore'n'Aft are where the talks take place. The Vendor Room is just off the lobby--follow the buzz.

When you register on Friday morning, you'll be given a bag with your schedule and a map of the premises. (At left is the bag from Conference 6). The info we provide will help you get around, but feel free to ask directions of anyone. We are a very friendly group. By noon on Friday you'll know where everything is (including the rest rooms).

Please note that on Friday morning from 10:45 to 11:15 Joanne and Cherie will hold a short Orientation in the Fore'n'Aft room. Come and say Hi, make some friends, and ask us anything.
If you are new to encaustic, we encourage you to attend two demos that we've scheduled especially for you.

Basics of Encaustic with Deborah Winiarski (right) will take place on Friday from 9:30-10:30.

Then, from 11:30-12:30, you'll have Introduction to Monotype with Pat Spainhour.

These two demos will give you an excellent grounding in the essentials of painting with encaustic, as well as an understanding of the terms you'll hear throughout the other demos and talks. Your Orientation is sandwiched between the two demos.

Even if you are an experienced painter or sculptor working in other mediums, if you haven't worked in encaustic before, plan to attend these two demos. We urge you to sign up for a variety of events--and not only demos, which give you a big dose of how, but talks, which will expand your thinking about the what and why and help place encaustic in the discussion about contemporary art.

Of course you'll want to visit the Vendor Room, We've set up the schedule so that it's open before the first event in the morning and after the last event of the day. But in fact it's open all day.

There's no place like our Vendor Room. There is more than you can imagine and much that you will want to take home.

Coming and Going

Two rooms allow for easy entry and egress while presentations are underway: the Mayflower Room for demos, the Harbor Room for talks. Both large rooms have their entry in the back. While we don't encourage coming and going during the events each hour, we will not prevent it if you go quietly between these two rooms. However, we are adamant that once events get underway in Beachside or Fore'n'Aft, the rooms remain closed. This is because entry to or departure from these two latter rooms while a presentation is underway creates a disturbance that interrupts the presenters and annoys the other conferees. Please be considerate.

We’re looking forward to the Conference! This post contains information on checking in at your hotel, Conference sign in, and what to pack for your stay. Please print out this information or load it onto your laptop or smart phone so that you'll have the info you need when you arrive.

Registering at Your Hotel
Check in at the Provincetown Inn is 3:00 p.m., though you might luck out and find that your room is ready. Whether you are registering at the Inn or at another hotel, the registration will be between you and the venue. The Conference and its activities will not begin until Friday. If you are staying elsewhere or you arrive early for your room at the Inn, know that The Provincetown Inn has a bar and a large, comfortable lobby. These are good places to meet up with friends. The town itself, a 1.5 mile walk or ride from the Inn, is loaded with restaurants and galleries. So there's plenty to do on your own before the official start of events.

Conference Sign In
All of the Conference demos and talks will take place at the Provincetown Inn (except for the Friday night openings in town). You will pick up your info packet and badge at the Inn--look for the signs in the lobby--on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Conference events will begin at 9:30 a.m., and you'll need your badge for entry.
.
The Events You Selected
The talks and demos are ones you selected when you registered. Because we have scheduled rooms based on the number of registrants for each event, please do not expect to switch rooms. And definitely do not room hop within the hour. Your entry is likely to distract the presenter and will certainly annoy the audience members.

If You Are Late to the Hourly Conference Events
. If you are late, you may enter the Mayflower or Harbor Rooms, as entry to those rooms is at the back, but please do so quietly.
. However, if you are scheduled for a demo in the Beachside Room or a talk in the Fore'n'Aft room and you are late, please do not enter. Your late entry will be an unwelcome distraction. The doors will close once the presentation has begun.
. If you are late for an event and cannot enter, there's plenty to do. The Vendor Room is a shopper's dream when you have it all to yourself. You'll will also have access the Postcard Show, which will be open to viewing throughout the Conference. (Selling will be on Saturday late afternoon.)

Friday Evening
When Conference activities at the Inn are over for the day, there will be openings in town. As of this writing, there will be openings at three galleries: A Gallery, Kobalt, and Julie Heller East. See the More Exhibitions page for specifics. Scroll to the bottom of this post for a note on East End and West End.
. Please note: Restaurants close early in P-town, around 9:00. (Cherie will ask Napi's, in the center of town, to stay open later on Friday evening so that you can attend the openings and still have time for a late dinner. For those of you who drive, note that Napi's has a free parking lot!) And there's always Spiritus Pizza, located in the West End, which is open until at least midnight, and they have vegetable and whole wheat pizza offerings, as well as large salads

Amenities at the Inn
. Wireless is available throughout the venue (but weak in the Cape Tip rooms)
. The lobby is a lovely place to hang out if you wish to be indoors
. If you wish to be outdoors, you'll find a spectacular view of Cape Cod Bay from the Inn's lawn
. There's a large parking lot for conferees
. Taxis and pedicabs will be available for hire by anyone who wishes to ride into town
. Restrooms are available on the first floor in three locations: one is steps from the Mayflower room, two are just off the lobby
. Personal accommodations are steps away from the Conference facilities
. There's an outdoor pool and an indoor bar

Photographing and Blogging
. You are free to photograph. However, do not use flash when you are photographing a speaker or demonstrator; it’s distracting to everyone in the room and it may temporarily interfere with a demonstrator’s vision. And please take care to not block anyone's view while you are photographing
. We do not permit videotaping of the events. Each demo or talk is the proprietary information of the presenter
. Want to blog about the event? Go right ahead
. Want to blog at the event? Go right ahead
..
Amenities in Town
. Commercial Street runs the entire length of Provincetown, from the Inn (One Commercial Street) to the far East End. Click here for the P-town Map--another link to download or print out
. It's one mile to the center of town. The road is easily walkable and very safe, even at night
. If you choose to drive, there's paid parking at Duarte's lot on Bradford Street or on McMillan Wharf; if you don't wish to pay for parking, you may be able to park on side streets in town, but pay attention to the posted restrictions
. A Stop & Shop is on Shank Painter Road, about three-quarters of a mile from the Inn. Here you can find drugstore items as well as food. The salad bar is popular, with a range of healthy selections
. In town you will find restaurants and shops of all kinds. If you want sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, sandals, clothing, a rain poncho, or a t-shirt that says "I love my two daddies," you'll find it.

The Beach
. A small beach is part of The Provincetown Inn
. Herring Cove beach is a few minutes' walk--about half a mile--from the Inn
. If you are an optimist with no sensitivity to cold water, bring a swimsuit. The water is June is typically about 60 degrees, but the beaches offer walkable sand and gorgeous views. You may even spot a whale or two from the shore.

Dressing for New England Weather
You should consider bringing a small range of clothing to handle a large range of weather. Suggestions: a tank top, a turtleneck, a sweater, an umbrella, a sun visor. In other words, in the space of a weekend in early June, it may be warm, hot, cool, dry, wet, sunny and/or rainy. The only thing you don't need is snow boots. Typically the day range is 60-80, with mid-70s the average, and the night in the low 60s/mid 50s. Here's a link to Provincetown weather, which is typically a few degrees cooler than Boston. You might want to bring a sweater for talks and panel discussions in The Mayflower Room, which tends to be chilly.

If you are attending for the first time and you're wondering how to dress, this is the official word: Wear whatever you want. Conferees show up in shorts and tank tops, long skirts, jeans, dresses, suits, ties, no ties. The important thing is that you be comfortable and have a good time.
A Note about "East End" and "West End"
Think Bizarro World, where everything is the opposite of what you expect. The Provincetown Inn, at the very tip of the tip, is the West End, whereas the the entry to town is the East End. Seems counterintuitive until you look at the map and see the way P-town curls into itself.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2278447338929728299.post-88264255206992686002012-06-09T18:59:00.000-04:002016-05-06T11:15:07.467-04:00If You Have A Medical EmergencyNo one attends a conference expecting to have a medical emergency, but if the unforseeable happens, here's what to do:

. If you feel ill and the feeling doesn't pass but you don't feel it's an emergency, call the Outer Cape Health Services in Provincetown at 508-487-9395. Address is 49 Harry Kemp Way, about a mile from the Provincetown Inn.
Hours:
Monday-Friday: 8:00am to 7:00 pm
Saturday: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Same day
appointments may be available

. If you feel you are having a medical emergency, whether it's an accident, an allergic reaction or any kind of serious health problem, call 911. The Provincetown Rescue Squad will respond, take your vitals, and determine a course of action for you. That might be a trip to the local Outer Cape Health Services in Provincetown or, for a more serious issue, the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. You will be responsible for getting there if the ambulance doesn't take you.

. If you have an accident at the Provincetown Inn, the same information applies. Don't feel embarrassed about "making a fuss" if you need to call 911. Make the call. Be sure to talk to a manager so that you can fill out an accident report as soon as possible after the incident.

. If you have an accident at Castle Hill, the same information applies. Cherie or a staffer will be there as well.

Pharmacies
. Outer Cape Health Services has a Pharmacy
. The Stop & Shop on 56 Shank Painter Road also has a full-service pharmacy: 508-487-3738.
The pharmacy is open seven days a week; hours vary

Additional thoughts
. Please take a moment to check out the websites in bold, as well as those listed on I am Provincetown.
. Be sure to let someone be a contact person for you so that we know where you are and can follow up with you. This is especially true if you are not staying at the Inn, or if you are staying by yourself. If you are traveling alone, leave a note for Joanne Mattera at the front desk of the Inn. Write your name and phone, and a contact name and phone number for the person we should contact in case of emergency.
