I'll be updating the site regularly from now until Conference time, but if you have a pressing query for which you don't see information, post it here. (If you are looking to share a room or travel arrangements, please use the Message Board.)
Q: The conference sounds exciting! I noticed that you described it as a conference by and for "professionals." I'm a teacher, do my own photography when I can, and have never done encaustic, though it's something I would love to learn about. Is this conference for someone like me? Thanks! Bonita
A: Bonita, there's some latitude with the concept of "professional." While we recognize that not everyone working in the medium will learn a living from artmaking, we strive to create a big-picture context for encaustic as a medium used in contemporary art. That, for us, is the difference between "professional" and "hobby." For that reason we don't focus on "encaustic art" (a limited and limiting category) and we don't encourage technique to the exclusion of all else. If you are open to the ways technique can be used in service to a larger vision, come and join us. If you are absolutely new to the medium, I'd suggest these options:
. If you can, take a Pre-Conference workshop in Beginning Encaustic. This will give you all the terms and techniques you need to fully understand the demos and talk at The Conference--and ways to think about how to express your vision in the medium
. Alternatively, sign up for the Basics of Encaustic demo on Friday afternoon at The Conference. You want to understand encaustic medium, wax paint, fusing, and options for substrates and ground. With those concepts, you'll go on to appreciate the amazing range of expression of your presenters
. Sign up for some talks as well as demos. Even at the beginning of the learning curve, it's great to see what artists have to "say" in a medium, not just how they use it
. Given your existing interest in photography, you might also consider the talks, demos and Pre- or Post-Con workshops that integrate photography and encaustic--a great way to expand your vision. Joanne

I would love to attend the conference but have an out of town graduation June 1-2. I am thrilled to see the pre-conference workshops which I might be able to attend and might also consider the post conference workshops.I was told last year that those that attend the conference get preference in signing up for the workshops. Does this apply this year?
Anon,
This year, because we will have a sufficient number of Pre- and Post-Con offerings, we would be happy to have you, or any non-conferee, sign up when Pre- and Post-Con registrations opens. The date for this registration will come after initial Conference registration, but even paid conferees will have to wait to register for Pre- and Post-Con. (We are a small number of people doing a very large job, so logistically it makes sense to get the Conference in place before focusing on Pre- and Post-Con.)
I'll post the lineup within a week, so you'll at least get to see what we have to offer this year.
I'm interested in sharing a room for the conference and driving from northern nj. If possible to arrive in Provincetown around noon.

What is the cost of a 3 day pre conference workshop? Danny Conant
Hi, Danny--
The cost of a Pre-Con is the same as a Post-Con. Three days is $532.
Complete price info here: http://encausticconference.blogspot.com/p/post-con-workshops.html
Did you change your name and location? I've seen a notice for something called EncausticCon. I'm all set to drive to Provincetown, and now I'm confused.
Leona,
Though other events have adopted many of our ideas, there is only ONE annual encaustic conference that is international in scope and operating on a fully professional level--and it's this one. The International Encaustic Conference--aka "The Encaustic Conference" or simply "The Conference"--is coming up on its sixth year. The longest running annual encaustic conference in the world, it will indeed be held in Provincetown June 1-3, with Pre- and Post-Conference workshops.
This is the conference I founded in 2007, now in co-production with Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. Our speakers and presenters are the best in the business, and you won't find them presenting at any other gathering.
Accept no substitutes. And to put it bluntly: Don't fall for the Con.
As the workshop are filling is there a wait list for sudden changes in schedules? For example, if someone wants to cancel is there someone ready to replace them?
Michael--
Glad you asked this. Thanks.
I believe Erin is maintaining a limited waiting list. If there's a workshop you really want to take email her (erin@castlehill.org) or give her a call to see how close you might be to getting in (508-349-7511).
